OK, so it’s Helen, not Michael who has announced her retirement from the ultra-safe Labour Seat of Sheffield Hillsborough. It has been described as a seat so safe that even Robert Evans can’t lose it and will no doubt be the subject of much undignified scrabbling by potential candidates within the next few hours.

I don’t want to eulogise about Helen - she’s not dead after all and will no doubt be a productive member of society for many years yet - but I do have a soft spot for her.
Three years ago at Labour Party Conference, I bumped into a small, familiar-looking lady with a stellar smile. She looked so familiar, that I smiled back and asked how she was doing. She replied that she was well and we made a little smalltalk about the day’s events at conference. On parting, I gave the lovely little lady a hug and a peck on the cheek and told her to stay in touch.
It was at least half an hour later when I realised That I had never met the lady before and she was in fact Helen Jackson MP.
Well, she may have thought I was a nutter - but she made a very good first impression on me.

It may be a safe seat now but it wasn’t in the 1980s - highly marginal between Labour and the Alliance.

Is this some form of Liberal nostalgia?
