An honourable member indeed

NOT abusing his position

Recess Monkey has received a flurry of emails from the office of Simon Hughes protesting his innocence of the transgression reported here.

After my earlier report, Hughes immediately contacted the Serjeant @ Arms, who in turn approached the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, who kindly approved Hughes’ use of the room on the basis that any monies raised go to Liberty and not to Southwark & Bemondsey LibDems. Also, the personal tour of the Palace with Simon Hughes isn’t conditional on paying for a ticket. Apparently.

Simon’s Aide de Camp told Recess Monkey, “I accept that the wording on some of the invitation literature may have been misleading in that it could have implied that the price was related to a possible tour of the Commons. However, money raised from the ticket sales is spent on the food and drink and the administration of the event. It is not a fundraising event. Any surplus will be given as a donation to Liberty.”

I think it was the words, “tickets are £20 please send a cheque made payable to Bermondsey Liberal Democrats” that were most misleading.

Nevertheless, Recess Monkey wholeheartedly apologises for misunderstanding Hughes’ intentions and may very well take up Simon on the offer of a tour - now that we know it’s free.

  1. How do I get Simon to take me on a free tour of the Commons?

  2. anyone can ask their constituency MP to take them on a tour around the Commons & Lords. doesn’t cost anything.
