It’s not often that Recess Monkey really cocks up - but last week I managed to do it twice. Firstly, I really have to apologise to everyone offended by comments about Rachel Squire and Peter Law. Some people had discussed potential by-elections in front of me and I reported it because it was scandalous. In my piece I failed to be suitably judgmental, feeling that the bad taste of it would be self-evident. Secondly, I wrote something utterly untrue about Meg Hillier, basically because some bugger lied to me and I didn’t check the story. So it’s my fault and I hope Meg will take pity on me and not sue me because if she does she’ll win because I’m squarely in the wrong.
I think for a while I’ll go back to writing about bananas so I get into less trouble.

“Some people had discussed potential by-elections in front of me and I reported it because it was scandalous.”
The stench of bullshit is almost unbearable.

What you said was disgusting and you cannot make excuses - just apologise properly and stop trying to wriggle out with pathetic exuses - “Some people had discussed potential by-elections in front of me and I reported it because it was scandalous.”.
You should give up the day job- you ain’t any good at it.

Oh how the mighty have fallen. Stick to selling advertising for tribune, that or get a degree and stop pontificating. YOU DON’T WORK IN PARLIAMENT ANY MORE.

True - no excuses. Just a cock up and as I say, it’s my responsibility.
In terms of the advice on my career choices, it’s funny you should say I’m no good at my day job, someone else suggested that to my editor in response to the piece.
On my education, I’m sure if I were able to get a degree, I would have one by now, but in my experience, such things tend not to stop people pontificating.
To be fair, I have been writing this website for almost a year and a half without being sued (despite some mutterings from Ed Vaizey) and without causing major offense - until that ill-judged piece.
I get 10,000 hits each month. I enjoy writing and absolutely no-one is obliged to read what I write. This is not the front page of The Times. You can choose to go elsewhere.
I cocked up, I’m truly sorry and I won’t be deleting criticisms of me from my comments pages unless they are notably extreme.

It takes balls to own up and apologise - so fair play.

Well done Recess it takes a brave man to admit his mistakes and take responsibility. I for one fully accept you are sorry and that’s from a person who spends his life representing defendants who constantly tell me they are sorry (generally because they have been caught). As for the adverse comments – anyone who has spent more than ten minutes with Recess on the doorstep will know how passionately he cares for equality and social justice. Maybe those who cannot forgive should look again at the right wing tabloids that constantly come out with racist homophobic diatribe - and I have never read an apology from them. I am also somewhat surprised that there are some who think that you can somehow be a better person for having a degree it does not say much about their attitudes towards the majority of people in this country. I should also say that the Tribune seems to have gone leaps and bounds since Recess started working there.
