Recess Monkey has just received an invite to an event in Cambridge tomorrow.
“Alistair Darling, Minister for Transport, will be visiting the Locomotive Pub, Mill Rd, Cambridge, tomorrow (Wednesday) between 3.15 and 3.50 to drive home the message not to drink and drive at Christmas.
Please join us for a photo call if you can”.
I do wonder if anyone ever assesses the efficacy of these Ministerial photoshoots. I can imagine the advice now… “Secretary of State, we have done some work that indicates that if you are seen in a pub in Cambridge, you will save 30 lives this Christmas, simply on the basis of the number of people less likely to drink there because you’re not much fun. If we can get you to more pubs, then perhaps over the coming year we can iradicate liver disease too”.

the locomotive? That was the first pub to ever serve me a drink!
I was 16 and all the punk rock kids used to go down at the weekend and get pissed, smoke dope in the back room and smash the place to pieces. Then on new years eye 1999 it got raided by the police and they started IDing… nevermind.

The locomotive, eh?
And this from the Secretary of State who has just closed a part of the National railway network forever by approving the highly-unpopular and unwanted Guided Bus on the mothballed St Ives railway line.
