Today’s Guardian has a special feature on the Lib Dem leadership soap opera, and brings up a topic which many Lib Dems have already thought about - where are the second preferences going to go?
As Simon Hughes seemingly has a better chance of winning the Lotto jackpot than the leadership, the question now is where his voters have placed their second choice. With Simon and Ming appearing to be on different sides of the party, and figure-heads of the so-called struggle between left and right, I’d guess that Ming isn’t going to get many of them. The real quirk of the election therefore could be if Huhne gets the big job simply because he’s not Ming.
This then raises the question about whether the Lib Dems will set up a coalition government in 2009 if they hold the balance of power? What would Charles Kennedy (the ghost of consensus past) have done…?

P.S. How about a caption competition for the Guardian’s picture above?

Huhne can’t help but laugh as Simon shows him that the Lib Dems have quite literally had a skeleton in the closet all along
