DPM time

The media would have us believe that certain ministers and Cabinet Ministers are seeking to unseat the Deputy Prime Minister. If there is to be a Labour Party Deputy Leadership election, who do you think should win?

(Poll is in the sidebar)

Feel free to leave comments with further suggestions.

  1. What about: I don’t like/want any of them?

  2. Whoa there Monkey…

Firstly you need to clear up whether we’re voting for Deputy Prime Minsiter or Deputy Leader? The Labour Party Constitution states that the Leader and Deputy Leader must sit in the Cabinet if the party is in Government. It doesn’t state, however, what position they must hold.

Therefore, anybody could be Deputy Leader and hold any position in the Cabinet (perhaps Tony will give it a try as well as Leader!?!)

What may well happen is - when JP stands down - Tessa Jowell or somebody is elected Deputy Leader and retains their Cabinet position. Gordon Brown then takes on the functions of the DPM (charing those all important Cabinet committees etc) - giving the party the start of the smooth transition everyone has been clammering for and shutting up the calls for instant change.

  3. Dr Freling is right, just like the ballot papers we present to the electorate this incredibly poor selection ought to have a “None of the above” choice as well.

  4. Plus what about the tory and Lib dem readers, it should be clear that they are voting for the person they think is doing a bad job.

  5. Seen Tribune diary this week, Recess?

  6. True Dr F.

Prezzer again.. well he’s got to go first . he may sit on his ass and do a Willy Whghtlaw.
    Allan Johnston = ???
Claire Short.. She never do it.. and if she did she be a pain in the ass.
    Peter Hain.. Far too Welsh
David Miliband.. although much vaunted. Basically lacks the talent.
Harriet Harman.. on consideration, she has the best overall profile of politically and in the eyes of the electorate and therefore took as the best balance for the job. So I’ve given her my vote…. Also she’s bought me a few drinks over the years, and that’s good enough for me.

  7. Well if it’s “none of the above” and that they make me a Privy Counsellor…I’m free

  8. Clearly the first female Labour MP to comment over the weekend that Prezza should go must be chosen to replace him……..so that would be Christine McCafferty MP….
