Recess Monkey was saddened to see Tony McNulty shuffled sideways by new Home Secretary, Dr John Reid. Replacing Tony will be the meteoric Liam Byrne. A little bird tells Recess Monkey that McNulty was the first Immigration Minister since some time in the early 90s to be deporting more failed asylum seekers than the number arriving in the UK.
In a speech to the Parole Board yesterday, Reid told the 160 members of the board that they would be doing more interviews with prisoners in future - rather than working from case files - to ensure the wrong sort of people are not let out of prison too early. Reid also announced that more Parole Board members need to be recruited who have been victims of crime.
Dr Reid might like to note that it was David Blunkett who cut down on the number of Parole Board interviews in order to save costs. Furthermore, I would be enormously grateful to anyone who can get tabled the written question, “To ask the Home Secretary how many members of the Parole Board have ever been victims of a crime” - because I’ll stake my bottom dollar on him not knowing the answer. For all he knows, 75% of Parole Board members have been victims of crime. Maybe Parole Board Members are supposed to go out and get mugged to satisfy the Secretary of State?
I fear that if his knee jerks much quicker, Dr Reid will become the Minister for Silly Walks.

Am I mistaken Recess or is this post a sign that you are responding to the news that your readership are primarily Tories???

However disappointed I get with a Labour Government from time to time, I always remember that we’re the good guys. The Tories can occasionally do good things despite being evil just as Labour occasionally does bad things despite being good - but it’s a numbers game and more net good will get done by the party that doesn’t want to subjugate the poor

Subjugate the poor….. ahhh come on Recess that really is last century stuff. What of course is 21st Century NuLab stuff is the desire to subjugate just about everyone, except of course the great leader and his henchpeople. BTW was it Redbridge that you were until recently a Labour Councillor in? Not a place where Labour can honestly claim to have been the good guys, at least not if the police in Ilford South are to be believed anyway.

How many left wing coppers do you know anywhere in the country? People who want to put on uniforms and tell people what to do might be necessary and valuable, but the mind-set doesn’t lend itself to a non-threatening leftist agenda

Matt. “Henchperson” thats a bit PC for you, maybe you’re succumbing to the new Labour way of thinking. As to the non-threatening leftist agenda, this monkey is far more aligned with the muscular form of socialism. Also I happen to know several beat coppers who are Labour Party members within my constituency. They see their duty to society as an honourable socialist duty.

“non-threatening leftist agenda”? spare us that or we’re all doomed - just look at any councils the LibDems run - when they were briefly in control of Wokingham they lost a million and a half quid down the back of the sofa and refused to bid for CCTV apparently because of civil liberties concerns. the council went tory soon after, which it has remained. and yes, quite a lot of police are Labour as it happens.

“People who want to put on uniforms and tell people what to do might be necessary and valuable” Yes, they fit in nicely with this “ban this, ban that” nannystate regime - just like the coppers who nicked Haw.

Why the hell should I go and join the SIS spooks - a bunch of nannystate gestapo nutters looking at us with their CCTV cams.

Hey Howler how do you know how PC or not I am anyway? That’s a presumption on your part you know, I have a long and relatively distinguished lefty past, bit like a (very) minor Paul Johnson I had an epiphany. Oh and if you’re looking for Labour or left wing coppers then try Sir Iain Blair (Met Police Commissioner) or even Mark Benbow the Borough Commander in Waltham Forest.Once again in fact your prejudices are showing Recess, in this case seemingly an “all coppers are fascist bastards” prejudice which does you as little credit as a sweeping generalisation based upon, say, someone’s race would be. I know it’s hard for those on the left to understand but we are in fact all different in our own ways and that btw is why Socialism has always failed.

Lefty past? Matt..tell us more..

zzzzZap.The ISI, Building at the end of Vauxhall Bridge is not the place I was the thinking of. I suggest that you’re actually take a look at that which I wrote. Then have a look at the railway arches at the south end of Vauxhall Bridge before you go jumping to conclusions.
I trust that you find my original suggestion more enlightening to my opinion of you.
Matt. Ok.. this has got to be worth a pint
or two .HM
