Pursuing Prezza

Sir Paul Beresford MP

There are a number of Tories who seem determined to pursue John Prescott to the ends of the earth, but none of them do it with more passion than Sir Paul Beresford.

At a Select Committee hearing with Prescott earlier this year, Beresford repeatedly interrupted his colleagues and the Chair to pursue his vendetta, and deviated wildly away from the subject of the meeting (the EU Presidency) to do so. It culminated in a classic moment when Beresford accused Prescott of not having English as his first language.

Beresford only ever turned up at the Committee when it furthered his ends to get at Prescott and rarely got involved in the main inquiries. But now that Prescott has been separated from his Department (and thus no longer within the remit of the Committee) his outlet to attack Prezza has gone, and his attendance has declined still further.

But Beresford is not done yet, as today’s written question reveals:

Sir Paul Beresford (Mole Valley): To ask the Leader of the House, if he will take steps to establish a Select Committee with the responsibility for overseeing the role of the Deputy Prime Minister. (81934)

Smells like desperation, as he’s obviously never going to get his wish. Red Tamarin wonders what Beresford is going to do with his time now. You can only ask so many written questions to a man without a job.
