Two different sources have reported to Red Tamarin that hosepipes have been in use in and around Portcullis House today to water the plants and trees. Thames Water have of course had a hosepipe ban in force since the 3rd April.
There are two potential explanations for this one. The first is the oft-used excuse that the Parliamentary Estate, with its categorization as a royal palace, is exempt from many of the laws and restrictions that apply to everyone else.
The second is the common work-around during hosepipe bans - you are allowed to fill your water butt (or other storage container) using a hosepipe from your kitchen tap. You can then unplug your hose from the tap and plug it on to the water butt, and use it legally to water your garden. It’s not exactly in the spirit of things though.
Whatever the reason, hosepipe bans only work if people grass up their friends and neighbours. Hello Thames Water? Yes, I think I may have something to report.
