The following email went out to Labour party members this morning:
Today a group of our donors have taken an ad in the Times stating their pride in funding the Labour Party. At a time when any political donation is subject to criticism these donors are taking a strong, public stance that they are happy to give financial backing to the party that is working to deliver the sort of Britain they want to see. A Britain where enterprise and aspiration are combined with fairness and social justice.
Members often say to me that they want us to be confident about what our government has delivered over the last nine years. We should all take pride in what is being achieved by the MPs that we worked to elect. Today’s advert is about asserting that participating in politics, working to change society for the better, is a good thing.
If you can join the donors and are able to make a donation today that would be great - please accept my sincere thanks.
As General Secretary I am proud of our broad funding base. As well as generous support from high value donors our party’s money comes from donations from many individual members, the affiliations from the trade unions and socialist societies and the subscriptions of you and 198 thousand other members. Donations from members are a crucial element of our funding.

Working together, all playing our different roles, we can really effect the future success of our party and our country.
Next year we will face a big set of local elections and elections for the Scottish Parliament and the Welsh Assembly. I thank all of you who are working hard on your local campaigns. Another way you can help is to make a contribution towards the campaign costs.

Whether or not you can make a donation all members are making a huge contribution to everything we do - for which much thanks.
Best wishes.
Peter Watt
General Secretary
I know we’re desperate for the cash, but is this really the time to be asking?

Throw in a peerage (usual terms) and I’ll think about it.

So it seems that joined up thinking has gone the same way as an ethical foreign policy and being a pretty straight guy then.
