The Scottish Green Party has quite creditably set up a “Whale Hotline”. People are encouraged to call 0131 348 6427 if they spot a whale, dolphin or porpoise and the Greens will rush out to ensure that aquatic mammal’s welfare is preserved.

While I am uncertain what politicians can do to ensure specific whales’ welfare in the short term - maybe make a speech to them about environmental damage? - I did note that the number given is in fact the number of the Green Party office in Holyrood - a state provided and funded resource.
What are we going to see next? Leader of the Scottish Tories in Holyrood, Annabel Goldie (0131 348 5662) setting up a Fox-Hotline so they can send out emergency hunting troupes?
Maybe this number could be the Holyrood Swingers’ Hotline - 0131 348 6394 - (*for legal purposes this is a JOKE - please don’t sue me Tommy)

Simple steps like sponsor a whale/dolphin can help in many ways. See Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society website. Simple - even for a politician.

Perhaps I could enlighten you to the purpose of this hotline, since you seem to have missed the point. (I hasten to add that my reason for clarifying this is simply that I am an environmental campaigner, and not of any political alliegance) The hotline was set up (temporarily) to gather sightings of cetaceans in the River Forth in order to highlight the species that might be found there. This was to emphasise the Scottish Greens campaign against proposed ship-to-ship oil transfers in the river, close to sites protected for their wildlife under European law. The ship-to-ship issue is interesting since it highlights the privitisation of harbour authorities by the Tories. As a result Forth Ports plc is responsible for consenting ship-to-ship transfers, whilst also standing to gain financially from it.
