Leader of the Commons Jack Straw has called on Muslim women to reject the veil in order to improve community relations.
Next week he is expected to berate Jews for eating bacon, Muslims for not drinking and the community divisions caused by Catholics for not putting out.

Catholics not putting out? I think you find they breed like rabbits and therein lies the problem.

“berate Jews for eating bacon”? Is one of Labour’s fabled headline-grabbing anti-crime measures that sounds impressive, but will have no effect on the real world?

Howler monkey must confess that he is a Discordian., who’s pious observance demand that I eat and enjoy a hot dog on Fridays. this practice is to remonstrate against mainstream religion, and to specifically piss off…
Catholics… who must not eat meat on Friday
Jews and Muslims… who must not partake of pork
Hindus… who must not partake of beef
and Buddhists… who must not partake of any meat.
HM frequently enjoys hotdogs on other days too.

Congratulations on displaying either:
a) Ignorance of what Straw actually said
b) Ignorance of mainstream Islamic teachings over the veil and so on. In case you weren’t aware of this, wearing the veil is supposed to be optional. The issue of the veil is not the same as the headscarf issue.
Not that I’d expect any better from a wannabe gutter-gossip blog like this.

let’s see the ugly face of Islam

To DLG-GOR, in fact the headscarf is optional as well you annoying ignorant prick. The only women in the Koran to actually be covered up are Mohammeds wives. In fact the only important thing that the Koran actually says about womens clothing is that women should dress modestly.

Mum is Iranian and is the full hijab, dad is Irish which meant as a kid we spent most of our family holidays in customs actually! Really! Suss laws, remember them? Now Irish people love Muslims now. They have taken a lot of heat off of us. Before, we were “the terrorists” but now, we’re “the Riverdance people”. I was surprised how Muslims reacted to the Danish cartoons. I thought: “How can you get this worked up about a cartoon?” But then I remembered how angry I was when they gave Scooby Doo a cousin. Let me tell you what blasphemy is. It’s the idea there’s a superior being who can make the mountains, the oceans and the skies, but who still gets upset about something I said. She’s an all-powerful being, but she’s just got self-esteem issues. What Iran needs now is a more modern leader - a mullah lite.

Then sky has it wrong (HOLD THE FRONT PAGE). Jack straw requests that they remove the veil, but doesnt demand it or refuse to see people who refuse.

This is such a non-story, I mean he’s not fucking them is he, like some would, look at my face am I bothered?

he’s right. If a woman wears the full face-covering, whether it’s her choice or her husband made her do it, then she’s cutting herself off from intereaction with people outside her immediate family. that’s the point of it. In my part of London I quite often see women dressed like this, sometimes with their husbands, who often have open-neck shirts on and trousers so tight they might as well be naked from the waist down.

I think Jack Straw has been brave to say what he has. When you get past the exaggerations of the story, what he said about face-to-face communication and chance social interraction in communities is very true.
