Two Lib Dem Councillors have been jailed for proxy vote/postal vote fraud in Burnley.
“In my judgment, there has been a culture within your party’s organisation in this ward which accepts that rules may be bent to maximise votes,†said Judge Andrew Gilbart, QC, at Preston Crown Court.
I’d love to see what the next Focus leaflet says about that…
Good news: the Electoral Administration Act 2006 will tighten up the PV system.
Bad news: it’s being implemented in time for the May 2007 local elections, and since it requires all postal voters to re-register their desire for a PV, the time for Returning Officers to ensure that existing postal voters are re-registered (and not potentially disenfranchised) is rapidly diminishing.
