Deputy Wrecker

John Spellar is so determined to stop the Deputy Leadership contest, that not only is he canvassing colleagues to join his cause, he’s also trying to derail the campaigns of candidates.

In an email conversation copied to the whole of the Parliamentary Labour Party (there’s always someone who hasn’t worked out what BCC does), he tried to drive a wedge between Joan Ruddock and Harriet Harman (who Joan is campaigning for) by asking if Harriet supported Joan’s passionate stance against renewing Trident.

Joan’s too smart to fall for that one, but not quite smart enough to check the spelling in her last email - cue Parliamentary Prankster Stephen Pound sending round one final message to everyone simply saying “signitures !”

In other Deputy Leadership news, Peter Hain really should spend more time buttering up his colleagues in person. Having his staff call MP’s offices asking to arrange a meeting, but not telling them what to say if someone asks what the meeting is about, isn’t exactly subtle. It’s not as though the average English or Scottish MP has much they want to get from the Secretary of State for Wales and Northern Ireland after all.
