I’m told that Peter Hain will publish his list of 44+ supportive MPs for the Deputy Leadership contest in the next couple of days. On his website at the moment there are currently 24 listed.
Not to be out-done, Harriet Harman is busy confirming with her supporters to make sure they are ready to go public, so that Hain’s declaration has as little impact as possible.
Hilary Benn said he was going to publish a supporters list last week, but that didn’t seem to happen. I’m sure in the light of this news, he’ll be preparing to do likewise, as will Alan Johnson.
Jon Cruddas had said he would publish a list of his supporters in the New Year, but I don’t think he can afford to wait if he has the muscle.
Let battle commence…
Might be time to update your selections if you are playing Second Guess.

While for some these lists are important (particularly crossing the 44 threshhold) I really do hope that the ‘debate’ during this deputy leadership contest extends beyond who has the longest list of MPs!! Members I speak to want to know what candidates think about trident renewal, academy schools, top-up fees and community safety. A Westminster-centric election contest won’t really help us renew, will it?
Personally I want to know how the candidates think are we going to do about the 200,000 members we’ve lost since 97, much more than who the MP for Wherever is going to back.
