Recess Monkey’s favourite tory - Conservative Future (UK) Chairman Mark Clarke, has been shortlisted for the Tooting constituency against Labour’s Sadiq Khan.
Recess Monkey formally endorses Mark’s bid for the Tooting Conservative candidacy in the knowledge that he’ll not trouble Sadiq in the slightest. However - amusingly - they are holding an open primary for the selection, which means anyone can turn up and ask questions (and vote!).
The selection evening is at the Polish White Eagle Club on Tuesday 13th February. Call some Tory on 020 8944 0378 to register. You will probably need to be on the electoral register in Tooting to get cleared but I reckon it wouldn’t be illegal to pick a local address and make up a name, insisting you have just moved into the area.
But what questions would I ask the candidates…?
Boy he’s going to have some revenge when I’m going for selections!

From what I’ve heard, quite a few of the Tory front bench have a strong intrest in tooting. It should be right up young Marks’ street.

Didn’t Mark Clarke change his surname to Clarke (from Ogden, or something) because it was statistically the most popular surname among MPs and he wanted to increase his electability? That was the rumour when he was at university a decade ago, and guys like Kenneth Clarke and Alan Clarke were still big beasts.
I’d probably ask him about that.

Hmmm, I’d ask him what he has against Claire Palmer..
…and ask why she punched him in the face

“I’ll definitely be glad to be back when I eventually become an MP.”
No shame. No shame at all.

Shame? What are your ambitions? Are you ashamed of them?

I have always felt that anyone can become an MP if they put in enough effort.
The challenge - the achievement - will be to become a good MP.

You even sound like an awful apparatchik. That last verbotal detritus meant not a thing - can anyone become an MP, truly?
Why would you be good as an MP, what ideas can you bring to the party, except a high opinion of yourself. Already the snake charmer works his way into the Daily Express - well good for you. But only do it if you are going to bring value - not just as an excerise in self-aggrandisement

You’re just wrong I’m afraid. You don’t know me or what makes me tick. We live in a democracy, not a meritocracy, and this is illustrated by the range of qualities present and absent among MPs of all parties. You are mistaking my low opinion of some MPs for a high opinion of myself.
I have been a Labour member for 15 years and I don’t see why in the next 15 years I don’t have an excellent likelihood of being elected. It’s not hubris - though it could be monomania.
You are right, I haven’t explained what I think is a good MP - but I’m happy to discuss it with you if you want to email me. Not that the correspondence would be private, just that it doesn’t belong on a satirical website. Maybe I should start a “why I want to be elected” section for users of labourhome.org
Frankly, what freezes my blood is not the effort it will take to get elected - but the mission once there.
And for pete’s sake, don’t presume the Sunday Express quotes everything perfectly. According to them, this site is researchmonkey.com

I think that is rather good idea and would be revealing - yes, do write a “why I want to be elected” section on Labour Home. I’d be genuinely interested in reading it.
So did the Diana Sexpress misquote you?
Kind regards.

Having read about your dirty tactics in trying to dig up dirt about an opposition’s daughter, I have abnsolutely no regard for you.
You ought to be ashamed of yourself.

It will be an interesting race, Sadiq Khan is liked there, but to become and MP you have to be more than just liked.
