Mark my words

A gem from Jack Straw in Business Questions last week that I haven’t had time for till now…

Anne Snelgrove (South Swindon) (Lab): I was very proud to be elected to this House in 2005, particularly given that I joined a 98-strong group of Labour women MPs. Does my right hon. Friend think it time for a debate on how to increase the number of female MPs in this House, and does he share my disappointment at the fact that so far this year the Conservative party has selected 17 men and no women?

Mr. Straw: A debate on this issue would be very important. I note that more people called “Mark” have been selected as Conservative candidates than have women.

Maybe I was a bit premature in thinking the Tories had changed their tune

  1. Maybe it was a premature question from Anne Snelgrove. Recent selections include:
Angela Watkinson for the new seat of Horncurch and Upminster
    Deborah Thomas - Twickenham
Julia Moody - Middlesborough South and East Cleveland
    Jill Skala - Colchester
    Hannah Parker - Exeter
    Diana Coad - Slough

  2. It is not the amount of women selected for seats but the amount of women selected for seats they can win! The Conservatives have always selcted women and ethnic minoroties just not for the seats they know they can win.

  3. Strangely enough out of the eight female MPs from Scotland four are called Anne.

  4. MC, Deborah Thomas is clearly a man.

  5. What a gem, just a pity it’s completely untrue…

A quick review of Conservative Home shows 6 Conservative PPC’s called Mark, whereas the number of women selected is 46.

  6. This confused me , the number of people called Mark in the house seems genuinely as worthy of debate than the number of women. You see that would have been funny how disappointing that you were just playing hunt the victim as usual.
