Tally Ho!

David Cameron on TalkSport this morning talks about his love of foxhunting.

Jon Gaunt: Duncan in Essex says on text, “Will you overturn the foxhunting ban”. That’s the question you want to ask as well isn’t it Steve?

CALLER: Yeah, when is he going to overturn it, or if he’s going to overturn it and how long will it be in this Parliament before he does?

David Cameron: What we’ve said is we’d give, in a new Parliament, we’d give MPs a free vote on overturning the hunting ban and if the vote went through there’d be a government bill in government time to get rid of it. I mean my own view is that the ban isn’t working. It’s a farce really. We’ve passed a law in this country that everyone is openly flouting and it makes the law look stupid.

JG: And you’re a hunter yourself?

DC: I have been in the past.

JG: Would you in the future?

DC: Well I don’t really get much time.

JG: Don’t sit on the fence. Would you, if you had a weekend off, go hunting? Say yes or no.

DC: I would, I mean I enjoy riding…

JG: You don’t see anything wrong with it, you enjoy it?

DC: No, I don’t see anything wrong with it at all.

JG: You like go to shooting.

DC: Yeah, I was brought up in the country, I enjoy country sports, I still have a bit of time for obviously the odd pigeon. And sometimes do a bit of fishing.

JG: Are they cruel, is it cruel and barbaric?

DC: No, it isn’t. I tell you what is cruel is if you don’t have … if foxes are all gassed and shot and wounded, I think that’s often crueler.

Tory manifesto 2010:
1. unban foxhunting
2. ban Terry’s Chocolate oranges

Has anyone heard any otgher policy commitments?

  1. But he’s right shooting and gassing does cause a lot more suffering to foxes than hunting.

What’s labour’s policy on shooting? Last time I looked it was to allow deer to be shot in the closed season.
