Defects of life

160 ernest and serious young conservatives, with Nigel Evans in tow, have set up the facebook group “When MPs defect there should be a by-election

Funny, I didn’t hear them mention any of this when George Osborne was grooming David Laws.

    From Political Betting…..some time ago….

“Whose defection are we talking about? The only MP that would defect to labour is Bercow considering his positions. I can’t believe any other Tories would.”

  2. I blogged about this yesterday. I can see the hypocrisy, and indeed none of this is new. As far back as the eighteenth century, William Windham MP was satirised by the sketch writers of the day as ‘turncoat William, to no party true’.

But it doesn’t make the argument for a by-election any less compelling. There is an obvious path. It is to resign from one’s party, apply to become Steward of the Chiltern Hundreds and then stand in the ensuing by-election.

Usually the voters don’t take to this sort of change of mind. That is the strongest reason why turncoats should put themselves forward to seek the electorate’s approval. When doing so (as I hope he does), Mr Davis might wish to remind his new master Gordon Brown that new PMs wishing to set a new agenda ought to do so with the electorate’s approval as well. Or is everyone to behave as though they were members of the Zhōngguó Gòngchandang Zhōngyāng Zhèngzhìjú Chángwù WÄ›iyuánhuì?
