Originally an ‘apology’ was not a statement of regret, but a statement in defence of one’s actions. The 18th century Poet Laureate (and ‘chief dunce’ of the Dunciad) Colley Cibber wrote a scandalous and highly readable memoir called “An Apology for the Life of Colley Cibber”.
