In 1996 Harriet Harman was the centre of controversy for sending her younger son to St Olave’s Grammar School in Kent.
In 2007 the Benn dynasty’s latest aspiring politician, Emily Benn, becomes the Labour candidate for East Worthing and Shoreham whilst still at school at…St Olave’s.
Good luck to Emily. If she’s anywhere near as bright, eccentric and entertaining as Tony and Hilary then she’ll be a welcome addition to Parliament.

The Tory’s new Hammersmith and Kilburn candidate Chris Philp also went to St Olave’s

Not sure Hillary is eccentric, whenever i have seen him he seems mind bendingly dull!

This fucking disgusting, what the fuck does a 17 year old from some grammar school in kent know about the problems of worthing, lancing and shoreham. As someone who grew up in worthing i would be tempted to (and i never ever, ever, ever, thought i would say this) vote Tory if they fielded a local candidate against her.

how many labour MP’s send their kids to schools in conservative constituencys?

Alice, there are about 646 MPs who know next to bugger all about young people, meaning that particular demographic is at best unrepresented, and at worst, demonised by the political class. Young MPs will of course make mistakes - but why shouldn’t they - the rest of the MPs make mistakes all the time.

If she lives where I think she lives, the alternative is a Harris Academy.

Might as well not bothered getting rid of those hereditary peers.

If there is a Oct Gen Election will she be the first candidate to stand for parliament whilst still at school?

I agree with Alex about the need for young people in parliament. In any case, given that the State is prepared to accept taxation from people Emily’s age, it seems unjust to exclude them from representative office.
As for the ‘hereditary peers’ jibe: you only need to glance at the Benn Diaries to get a sense of a family that breathes politics. And good for them, I say.
