No election, and thank god for that. I’ve never been more happy to be wrong.
But you have to wonder about the strategy of Gordon’s inner sanctum; talking up an election was always going to force the Tories to unite behind Cameron, and they had to come out in favour of an election even though they weren’t ready for it. They had no choice but to call Gordon’s bluff, so unless he was committed to call an election it was certain to backfire.
Amongst the rest of the party a fair amount of havoc has been created. Expecting an early election, one MP (at the request of the Party) was preparing to rescind their resignation and stand again, and another who was definitely retiring had cleared out their Commons office completely in preparation.
Anyway, so it’s back to work and back to normality. The Sports and Social reopens tonight after its refurbishment, which is excellent news. The refit looks good, and regulars who have had a sneak peak inside have been positive - especially about the prospect of a pool table. And to think an early election could have deprived us of this for a month…Gordon, you made the right choice!
