Looks like the Electoral Commission doesn’t practice what it preaches when it comes to protecting personal information.

It declined an Freedom of Information request inquiry from a certain journalist asking for the addresses for prominent donors to David Cameron (James Lyle, Lewis Chester, Robin Fleming and Trevor Pears) and Basher Davis (John Aspinal - though the Commission has referred to the other David, Davies not Davis!)

The secretary to the Commission wrote back to the hack saying “the information requested is personal data, the disclosure of which would contravene the data protection principles.”

Sadly the “data protection principle” didn’t extend to the identity of the person making the inquiry.

If you scroll up an down quickly, the black blocks covering the name aren’t THAT quick in coming up!

You’d think the Electoral Commission could scrape enough money to buy a half decent felt-tip pin!

  1. If you open the pdf with Adobe Acrobat (rather than Adobe Reader) you can simply click+drag the black boxes away from the text.

By the way, your computer must be pretty slow if it fails to draw the black box before you can read the name! :)

  2. The boxes are added as coloured-in text note -if you print the document selecting “without markups” you get a clear crisp unadulterated e-mail. I wonder if this how it works in all secret documents…? Time to find out who really killed Rod Hull.

  3. We’re through the looking glass, people!

  4. Hey Monkey, this is very interesting but why haven’t you got the story of Cameron’s think tank urging a northern exodus? Its nice to know the Tories of today are in no way related to the Tebbit-like “Get on your bikers” of the 1980s!!!!
