I was expecting rather more of the hooray antics at Tory conference (writes R Monkey Esq. from Birmingham New Street Station) but the mood was generally quite muted. Between the credit crisis and a level of discipline worthy of the US Marine Core, no-one was seeking headlines. Even David Davis was heard saying, “I’m behaving myself this week: Not sure about next week though”.
There was a moment when that lone David Davis was seen watching wistfully the DC entourage and it’s halo of adulation. And then there was the overheard remark to the talented Andrew Tyrie MP; “Why aren’t you Shadow Chancellor?”.
In fact the only hubris and bravado came from Team Pickles, brashly telling people in the bar that they had “Done Over” Caroline Spelman and that Cameron would have “no choice” but to replace her with their man.
Oh, and Liam Fox’s poorly timed speech on his faith in the markets at last night’s Gala Dinner. “I trust markets more than I trust politicians”, he said as we waited for America’s politicians to draw us back from the brink of global economic meltdown - whence we were escorted by the markets.
But one reason why I’m glad to be getting back to London is that Tory Conference is overwhelmingly white, overwhelmingly old and overwhelmingly male. I can’t wait to see some normal people again.

“I can’t wait to see some normal people again” - so not going back to Westminster then? Arf arf…

Yes, because if you’re white, old, or male, you’re not normal. Ffs. Though you may be on to something, in terms of New Labour thinking if not in real life: after all, you’re certainly a lesser class of person in Harman’s book if you’re white and male.

Most people aren’t even male

Don’t want to raise this again, but according to census data more than 90 percent of the residents of the UK are white. It’s only within London and a few other cities that the proportion of non-white people is much higher.
Obviously, if the proportion is higher in those places, it’s lower in other places.
