The not so secret tax bombshell

Q. Who put up VAT from 15% to 17.5% to pay for the fall out from the poll tax and then put VAT on domestic heating and fuel?

A. Here’s a picture clue.

  1. Dunno. Try this though:

  2. 2 things. It wasn’t to deal with the fallout from the poll tax. Labour fully supported the Tory decisions on ERM which led to this.
Secondly, I haven’t seen Labour reducing VAT in the last 10 years.

  3. my god - that’s a face you wanna punch isnt it. Lamont I couldnt care about…

  4. Actually Andy, you’re wrong. Brief history catch-up for you (pay attention at the back now.)

The 2.5% rise was used to raise money to cut poll tax bills by £140 through the “Community Charge Reduction Scheme.” This scheme was aimed at helping councils suffering from the fall-out of massive levels of defaulting on the poll tax. Can you believe - people thought the tax was unfair!
Neil Kinnock rightly described the rise as the ‘biggest climbdown in modern political history’.

Secondly, we admittedly haven’t reduced VAT until now. But neither did we almost double it from 8% to 15% like dear old Margaret did.

  5. (pay attention at the back now.)

Are you some sort of kinky school teacher? Dear old Margaret died years ago, I read it on blog somewhere …

  6. Not a bit of it, just part of the Bendy Bus Jihad, facts being their own bête noire.

  7. Yaaawwwnnn………..

  8. Oh and of course Hilton you’ve just been outed by Dizzy as having deteriorated into nothing more than Derek Draper’s mouthpiece, reduced to begging for other people to feed you pro government things to say on the telly ‘cos you can’t think of any for your self. rather like the rest of the population.

    Very very sad indeed.
